What Is The Monkey Mind?
The Monkey Mind is the "thought" distractions (chattering) your mind creates when you are trying to meditate or focus on anything.
It becomes a niggling, yet tangible annoyance in the back - or front - of your mind especially when you are trying to focus on something like a Mantra .
These thoughts are created because the person lacks mind control.
It is that simple.
Beginners
This is one reason that it is a good idea for people who are meditation beginners to say their mantra out loud.
Chanting the mantra helps you develop a resistance to the distractions of the Monkey Mind.
If you do not develop a resistance to these distractions, you will remain on the ground level of potential experiences you may be able to access if you practice more advanced and controlled meditation techniques.
Techniques like "Soul Ascension" will not be available if you cannot control your mind.
Consider from where your thoughts originate... This is what you need to learn to control.
Distraction and Reaction are not your friends.
Monkey Madness Example
The following example is encouraging The Monkey Mind instead of trying to "control" it.
I liken this to any Meditation technique (like TM or guided meditation) that does not teach discipline.
When there is no discipline and only distractions, these lead to more distractions.
In this example, each vehicle (car, truck, bus etc) represents a thought.
Undisciplined Meditation is like sitting next to a busy highway and as the thousands of vehicles pass by, you stop one and get in and go for a ride.
Each "Car" represents an uncontrolled thought and the journey taken in the car represents the distractions your mind encounters if you follow these extraneous thoughts which usually have no real significance or substance anyway.
- you stop 1 vehicle and go for a ride ... and then
- you stop the next vehicle and go for a ride ... and then
- you stop the next vehicle and go for a ride ... and then
- you stop the next vehicle and go for a ride ... and then
- you stop the next vehicle and go for a ride ... and then
- you stop the next vehicle and go for a ride ... and then
- ... and then ... and then ... and then ... ad infinitum ...
See each thought or distraction as one of the vehicles passing you. Now imagine how "little" benefit you receive from getting involved in every distraction. Or any vehicle for that matter.
Logical Question For You ↟↟
How long do you think it will take you to reach your destination?
How many lifetimes will you waste?
There will always be distractions in your life - including what is often referred to as "The Monkey Mind" and it is your job to "be in control" of your extraneous thoughts including your "Monkey Mind".
In My Opinion there is a better "method" of Meditating which allows you greater control and benefits in your life. For many millennia it has been referred to as (anglicized) "Controlled Meditation" .
I was taught that any meditation technique which allows for distractions, is a complete waste of time. The small benefits you "may" gain from distractive meditations, are completely insignificant compared to the benefits of "Controlled Meditation" .
Other Common Distractions ↟↟
- Sex
- Greed
- Anger
- Ego
- Lust for power
- Emotional instability
- Anxiety / Depression
- Environment (noisy neighbors, planes, trains, vehicles etc)
How To Stop The Monkey Mind
Stopping the Monkey Mind is fairly easy.
To start with, you need to speak a Mantra out loud so that your mind and body can work on being unified.
This "Mantra" should be a single word (like OM) and it should be repeated for at least 20 minutes "per meditation session".
Alternatively you could have a multi-word mantra and just say one word per breath.
Next - Focus
You need to focus on your breathing.
Breath in for 10 seconds, and then breath our for 10 seconds. I have created a "10 Second Meditation Ping" for you to use to help control your breathing.
You need to focus on your breath while doing this.
Next - Visualization
You need to visualize "something" which is esoteric in nature.
A great example of this combined technique is called the "Golden Mantra" .
Controlling The Monkey Mind
In order to control the Monkey Mind, you will need to incorporate 2 or even 3 disciplines.
Double Mantra Technique
For many people there is another way of Controlling The Monkey Mind.
Start off using a single word Mantra like OM.
The reason I say several weeks is so that you build up muscle (brain/mind) memory which allows you to go to the next step.
Next Step 1:
After several weeks, add a second mantra.
For example: OM + Love or OM + Peace or OM + Success or OM + Star etc.
Most people can actually say both of these mantras in their mind at the exact same time.
DO NOT say one mantra and then the second mantra after.
They must both be said at the same time.
Next Step 2:
Once you have Mastered this double mantra method, start adding Visualization to your new portfolio.
This is particularly beneficial to people doing Gazing Meditation.
Advanced Meditation Control
I have continued to discuss another control method on Monkey Mind control on the Advanced Meditation page.
Sitting Or Standing?
Can I meditate sitting, standing or laying down?
If you were brought up to sit in the full lotus position, then you can sit in the full lotus position. However the full lotus position is not for everybody especially if you are an older person (unless you have flexible legs).
The full lotus position can be extremely uncomfortable if you have not trained to sit like this since childhood.
However, since most people do not practice full lotus, I was taught that the most important 5 points are:
- RULE 1: Wear loose clothes
- RULE 2: Be comfortable
- RULE 3: Keep your back as straight as possible
- RULE 4: Focus on your breath
- RULE 5: Control your mind

You cannot write poetry on a page covered with text. This is why RULE 4: is so important.
(1) if you are uncomfortable, then you will quickly lose interest and stop meditating.
2) if you are uncomfortable, then your mind will constantly be focused on your discomfort and your meditation sessions will be wasted.
(3) sitting up straight is of paramount importance for many reasons, including good posture and Kundalini energy movement.
Laying Down ?
I have often meditated while I was laying down, either (or both) before sleep and / or first thing in the morning.
Meditating at night before sleep is 1 excellent way of helping people with insomnia.
The only problem with morning meditation in bed is that you will often have a full bladder which becomes uncomfortable. See RULE 1 + 2
Half Lotus (Ardha Padmasana)
The image is a girl sitting in the Half Lotus position which is also perfectly acceptable.
Note that only 1 of her feet are is lifted up onto her thighs. Again, this is not a mandatory sitting posture and you can meditate just as well sitting on any chair including a recliner, lounge chair or even the lounge itself.
Waterfall Meditation
Over the years I have been asked about Waterfall Meditation where the person meditates under a waterfall.
For all of you who are starting out with meditation, this Waterfall Meditation business is a long way away from where you are today.
There are 2 simple tests to see if you are ready to even try to do Waterfall Meditation.
1) Turn on a radio in your meditation room, turn it up to around 8 or 9 and start meditating.
You need to be able to meditate with this blaring sound for at least 2 - 3 hours.
While you are meditating, you should not hear any sound because you have detached your mind from your body.
NOTE that a radio is only 1 step, because with Waterfall Meditation you also need to overcome 3 other problems.
- Cold water.
- Water crashing down on you in an unregulated manner.
- The distinct possibility of rocks, branches or even logs coming over the top of the waterfall and crashing down on your head.
- You need to be proficient with "Tummo Fire Meditation"
.
If the water is very cold, you may have another problem of actually not being able to stand up and walk.
Tummo Meditation
If you want to do Waterfall Meditation, you also need to be extremely conversant with "Fire Meditation" which is called "Tummo Fire Meditation" in Buddhism.
Does Fire Meditation work you ask?
Absolutely, yes.
I was taught Fire Meditation when I was 18 and practiced it for years. However moving to a hotter climate made me cease doing this meditation because there was no further need for it.
To do this you need to combine Sky Chi and Earth Chi.
You also need to activate your visualization capabilities.
Finally you need to feel your "soul" lift up above your body to allow the energies to flow freely.
I will write more about this technique at a later date (if there is enough interest).
Background Mantra Verses
On this "Melodies" page I have listed several "short" melodies which have helped many people not only placate their Monkey Mind, but also help elevate them emotionally before and during prayer and /or meditations.
I hope that they can also help you as well.
