Top Make Your Own Compost - Bag Method

Please READ Section 1 READ Section 1 before you proceed.

Garbage Bag Method for people with limited space.

You will need. ↟↟

Each section may also list other ingredients specifically pertaining to that method.

When you or your neighbors cut your lawn, add these grass clippings to your first garbage bag until it is full.

DO NOT add sticks for 2 reasons:

  1. They do not break down.
  2. They will poke holes in the plastic and the moisture will vent out.

This "venting" will decrease your compost decomposition time dramatically.

In Fall (Autumn), gather as many (Mineral Rich) leaves as you can and pop them into the black heavy duty garbage bags as well. (Pine Needles start off acidic but decompose to pH neutral).

Side Note: In one of my agronomist lessons I partook of back in the 1980's, we were taught that Pine Needles were toxic to the soil as they released a nasty gas and that they acidified the soil. Now I am told that this is all a load of bunkum.

Rinse these leaves to remove most of the car exhaust "soot".

Comfrey is possibly one of the very best leaves you can add to any compost.

You should also add GREEN leaves as these contain nitrogen.

If you have access to cow manure (that has not been injected with antibiotics (or fed antibiotics) or anything to de-worm the animal, then add 1 - 2 kilos (4-5 pounds) of this to each bag as will.

Cow manure contains 4 important microbial "families" which expedite decomposition of the organic matter.

Rice ↟↟

* Rice (do this first)

Boil 1 Kilo of rice + 10 cups of water.

Let cool to room temperature and puree (blend) when cool.

Potatoes? ↟↟

Next, get several RAW potatoes and blend this into a puree.

Potatoes and rice give bacteria a very rich source of starch.

Many bacteria absolutely love starch, as it is a highly concentrated source of glucose.

You can buy or

Bacteria digest starch by excreting specific enzymes (like amylase) to break the complex starch polymer down into simpler sugars, which they then consume for energy.

This expedites your compost process, so long as there is enough moisture for the bacteria to stay out of their "Dormant Cyst" stage.

Whey ↟↟

If you make your own may I suggest that you keep the Whey (even in the freezer is OK) and then when you are making compost or compost tea, use the Whey water instead of some of the tap water.

Whey is the yellowing watery substance which you drain off from your "curds" or main Yogurt (Yoghurt).

Most people throw this out and it is such a massive waste of bacteria food when they do this.

Alternatively you can buy Whey but this is an added expense.

When I was making "Compost Tea" I would add a cup of whey and the bacteria would literally "go nuts" and often the compost tea would bubble over the top of the drum I was using. (making a giant mess I might add which did not impress my wife for some reason?)

Mix ↟↟

When your bag is full of grass and leaves, then do this.

Mix the now cooled Rice and the potatoes together in a large container and then add the Humic acid, Watered down 3 tablespoons of BLACKSTRAP Molasses and the (optional) Yeast.

Add FILTERED water as needed so that you have a thick jelly like consistency.

Then I tie the bag off and leave for 6 months and you should have your own natural compost.

Or if you have a back yard, buy a couple of 200 or 220 liter (55 or 60 gallon) blue "open top" drums and fill up with grass and leaves, add 1 gallon (4 liters) of water every 2 months and keep the lid on, adding more grass and leaves when you can.

Also add dehydrated seaweed if you have access to this valuable resource.

Mycorrhizal Fungi ↟↟

When this has turned into compost, add 20% by volume of compost into a large container and 1 heaped Tablespoon of Mycorrhizal Fungi to every 5 gallons of water.

NOTE that this should be placed UNDER the soil and not on top so that the Mycorrhizal Fungi has access to the roots system of the plants where it will do THE most good.
