Making Your Own compost is easy so long as you do NOT USE vegetables or plants which have been sprayed with any kind of pesticide, insecticide or herbicide or fungicide.
DO NOT USE chlorinated water as chlorine is a Biocide and KILLS everything it can.
DO NOT USE Manure from cows, or horses that have been (inoculated) with dewormers or other pharmaceuticals like hormones.
TIP: If you do use horse manure, BURY it deep, or you will end up with a brazillian plants like corn and wheat, barley and oats etc popping up everywhere.
DO NOT USE Chicken manure unless it if from your own chickens and you are NOT feeding them commercial chicken feed which often contains "God alone knows what".
However:
Leaves and grass are a great source of carbon which bacteria love (again, do Not use anything which has been sprayed - especially with RoundUp or any other chemical - especially with anything which contains glyphosate.
Glyphosate, the world's most widely used herbicide, poses risks primarily to users, though debates regarding its safety persist. ($$$)
While major regulators like the EPA and FDA maintain it is safe when used correctly, independent studies link it to cancer, endocrine issues, and neurological changes.

In fact, products like Glyphosate are not even needed except by the medical industry for making people sick. See the following 3 videos to see why natural farming is better than chemical farming.

NPK Commercial Fertilizers?
The other thing that should be on your list of prohibited commercial fertilizers is anything (anything) which contains N.P.K. synthetic Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K).
Synthetic Nitrogen is well known to destroy your soil

You are better off "double cropping" using Peas (including ChickPeas) or Beans or Clover which are all "Natural" Nitrogen Fixers in the soil.
Alternatively. you can use a Cover Crop like Alfalfa (Lucerne) which also fixes nitrogen Nodules and which also pulls up minerals from deep in the soil (unlike common straw) and then you can chaff (cut up) this Alfalfa and reinvest this back into your soil next season as "green manure".
If your wife is having menstrual OR menopause "issues", may I suggest RED Clover (Trifolium pratense) because you can also tincture the red flowers and "red clover flowers" is well known in the Herbal Community to help women with menstrual or menopausal issues.
This is due to its high concentration of isoflavones (plant-based compounds known as phytoestrogens).
Soy is also abundant with phytoestrogens BUT the problem is that most Soy is GMO which causes Other problems.
These are the ground rules.
