I have learnt this same secret from studying the following religions.
- Hinduism
- Shintoism
- Buddhism
- Sikhism
- Judaism
The foundation of prayer is trust and if your heart is deceitful, then there is no trust.
The "Path" that prayer must follow is called
In other words, if you are a pathological liar, then how can you expect your prayers to be taken seriously when they ascend?
Also - If all you think about is physicality and yourself, how can you expect "God" to answer you?
I remember the Dalai Lama once saying that "whatever is truly in your heart is what you take to heaven". (paraphrased)
So what is the "secret"?
The secret is intent.
Such a small word with such a heavy responsibility.
Let me ask you these 2 questions.
- Do you get emotional when praying?
- Do you cry (for no apparent reason except happiness) when praying?

Observation ↟↟
In my searching for "The Truth" and which religion to follow (back in the late 70's and 80's), I went to many places of worship and watched many people praying.
The main "thing" I observed was that so many people either prayed by "Rote" or did not even pray at all because the preacher/pastor/priest/etc did the praying for them.
This means that there was "no" emotive connection between the "audience" or "participants" and The Creator.
The most "fervent" people I have witnessed praying all seem to be in "Evangelical Churches" where people willingly participate in prayers - but there is a Caveat on this as well.
Quite often, the "Preacher" will do most of the talking which is sad.
If Only
If only they got people to recite common prayers like many of the "Psalms" (besides Psalm 21) then they would stimulate much higher spiritual action above and they would draw down much more Light from The Creator.
Praying / davening by rote lacks foundation.
You cannot build a house unless you have a solid foundation.
Sermons
Sermons have a purpose but they do NOT engage the individual and in fact I would even go as far as to say that in 2026 - with the vast majority of people being able to read and write - that Sermons have almost out lived their usefulness.
Discussing various portions of "The Bible" (whatever your "bible" may be) is important - but you still need to engage your congregants.
They must participate and feel that THEY TOO are contributing to the holiness of the moment.
Personally engaging in Prayer with intent and passion is beneficial to every congregant regardless of their choice of spiritual belief.
A Wise Man's Eyes ↟↟
There is a saying in Kabbalah that "a wise mans eyes are in his head".
Translation 1
Most translations of this say that this means the man (person) does not cast their eyes around looking at distractions (especially those in dresses).
One of the handicaps that was (is) imposed upon males is that they are "visually distracted" (in most cases).
Why is this?
There are 2 main reasons.
- It is the way of a man to seek a wife.
- Hunting.
Translation 2
This "distractions" also applies when praying (or meditating).
Every Buddhist monastery I have been to, the monks ALL look downwards when meditating or praying.
I am sure that this is not a universal thing, but so far that are batting 10 out of 10 as far as I am concerned.
If someone is distracted, they may glance up and then resume their meditating posture almost immediately.
For example:
When you close your eyes, then you cannot see "outwards" so your focus turns inwards.
This is the essence of Translation 2.
What you focus on and the experiences you "may" have are for another page.
I will give 2 examples:
1) Example 1 is where the people singers are generally looking around the room.
2) Example 2 is where the singers have their eyes closed while they sing.
You Decide which method is the right one for connecting to The Creator.
I will tell you this however, you cannot with the Divine Stillness if you are constantly distracted.
My connection is with example 2.
