Catholic Church Indulgences
I want to start this off by saying that this is not a slight against Christanity, however, when you see evil and corruption like the Pope and "Edgardo-Mortara"
incident, it must be exposed and that is (hopefully) the only way that it cannot repeat.
Shine a light into darkness to remove the shadow people.
Like the catholic church get out of hell "Indulgences Contracts" were where you paid the "church" $X depending upon the sin committed (or to be committed) and then they wrote you a piece of paper which claimed that God would forgive you of your sins and let you into heaven. (liberal translation) "Wikipedia"
Here is the really stupid part of that story.
When you die, you do not have any physical body and even the air you breathe ceases to exist so HOW can you carry a piece of paper to "god".
And I speak from personal experience about dying, because in 2023 I died twice.
Also, there are many "layers" between us and The Creator so you do NOT get to "meet" The Creator per se possibly because of time constraints and taking care of the multi-verse etc.
Back To The Story ↟↟
In the 1500's. reformers, known collectively as Protestants because they protested Catholic Church's practices, split with the Catholic Church over issues concerning Church teaching, authority, and specifically the corruption which had taken root in the church itself with one of the main contention issues being the practice of issueing Indulgences. (get out of hell cards)
Historians date the beginning of the Reformation to circa 1517, when German theologian (the original) Martin Luther posted a list of ninety-five theses, or grievances with the Church, on the doors of the Castle Church in Wittenberg (Germany).
Martin Luther was no saint but he knew absolute corruption when he saw it.
Luther originally expressed a sympathetic attitude towards Jews in his 1523 book (writtings) "That Jesus Christ Was Born a Jew" where he criticized the Catholic Church's harsh treatment of Jews.
However, he became a rabid "antisemite"
in his later years after he failed to convert Jews to Christianity.
Luther's "other" main criticism revolved around the Church's practice of selling indulgence-papers (contracts) that supposedly granted forgiveness of sins in exchange for a (sizable) contribution to the Church.
No matter how this is sugar-coated online - it was possibly the original Phishing Scheme.
The catch was that the "victim" could only get these "papers" when they personally visited Rome. This guaranteed that the money would actually end up IN the coffers of the main church and not in the pockets of the local priests (which eventually happened).
This "pilgrimage" later became corrupted and many priests would offer these contracts to (basically) anyone who visited them and paid the applicable fee.
If you do a google search for "catholic church Indulgences"
you will see that some websites cannot even tell the truth about what "Indulgences" actually were.
I was surprised to see "Wikipedia"
has a much more accurate version of how Indulgences worked.
Should Be Noted ↟↟
It should be noted that the "Roman"
catholic church has rarely been an honorable institution from its inception, to the betrayal of Constantinople (1453)
), to the betrayal of Countess Elizabeth Bathory
to the betrayal of children from pedophile "priests"
+
+++ (since its inception) even to this current day.
