Top What Is Buddhism?

Buddhism ↟↟

What is known as Buddhism today was originally understood in ancient times as the "Dhamma-Vinaya"‘. The word "Dharma" (in Sanskrit ) has various meanings but mainly refers to "universal truth".

What we refer to as Buddhism is often claimed to be named after "The Buddha" (The Budh) which is named after the "term for" enlightenment or enlightened one or spiritually awoken.

Bon (Bonism) ↟↟

There are 2 types of BON religion.

The original is ancient dating back many thousands of years and some say that it predates the last 2 global cataclysms.

While the "New Bon" purportedly begins in Eastern Tibet with the works of Tulku Loden Nyingpo (1360–1385).

Despite many of the search results you get on google, Buddhism was influenced by Ancient Bon and Buddhism absorbed many of Bon's beliefs, rituals, and deities.

Buddha ↟↟

(Ancient) Bonism was one of the main religions at the time that Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) lived (563 to 483 B.C.E.) and even if you use just common sense, Bon would have had some influence on Siddhartha Gautama because he was a "seeker" who sort many sources for enlightment.

Bonism, commonly shortened to "Bon", is an ancient Indigenous Himalayan religion purportedly originating in certain regions of Tibet.

Bonism (Bon) was followed by people in Tibet called Bonpo for many centuries before the advent of Buddhism.

Some sources claim that Bonism is over 14,000 years old although I have yet to see how they validate this claim.

Interestingly, Shenlha Okar and Satrig Ersang are the Bon equivalent of the Dhaka and the Dakini in modern Buddhism.

Enlightenment ↟↟

The short version of this means that the person becomes enlightened and in the case of Buddha per se, become conscious of all of his (or her) past lives and the accumulation of Karma - both good and bad - that they have caused or not caused.

For example, an "inaction" may also be considered an "action" if it causes a deficit to someone which may have been avoided by your intervention.

The most profound of these actions is when you save a life.

One of the most negative examples is when you "murder" someone (excludes killing in self defence).

People often get these 2 confused because of a bad translation of the which stipulates not to murder. However, it doesn't say "not to kill".

A modern analogy would be someone waking up from a coma they had been in for hundreds or even thousands of lifetimes.

Similar - but different - to the 10 commandments, Buddhism has their own "To Do" list of being a good, better, best spiritual person. These are called the Eight-Fold Path and the Four Noble Truths.

The Four Noble Truths are a fundamental part of the teachings of Buddhism that state as follows:

  1. The truth of suffering: Suffering exists.
  2. The truth of the cause of suffering: Craving physical desires, or [Tanha in Pali] or [Trsna in Sanskrit] (तृष्णा)], is the root of suffering.
  3. The truth of the end of suffering: The way to end suffering is to stop desiring (craving physical materialistic things).
  4. The truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering: Also known as the Eight-fold Path, this path is a general guide to find liberation from suffering.***

*** Liberation from suffering is only possible if you are 100% honest and true in your intent. My teacher told me that even the shadow of a shadow will impede your final ascent.

*** Please note that there is a universal difference between physical desire and "God" level desire - or desiring to be at One with The Creator.

The word "desire" has become overly sexualized and this is what confuses most people from the get go.

I prefer to use the word "yearning" instead of desire.

Interestingly, these "Truths" tie in perfectly with the

Buddhism is a path, a method of being aware of Enlightenment and it offers guidelines on how to attain Enlightenment.

I am not advocating Buddhism as a religion - because it is not a religion - it is merely a path and there is no conflict with Christianity or most other religious.

Only mis-informed, ignorant or dishonest people (and TV shows) will claim that Buddhism is a religion and the worse offenders claim that Buddha is a god.

In fact most "religions" are simply a "path to" or way of finding Enlightenment - or at least they should be.

In my opinion, Buddhism actually enriches Christianity by reinforcing universal truths common to both teachings.

A Few "Path" Example

Tao (AKA: Gao || Dao) is the underlying principle of the universe, combining within itself the principles of yin and yang and signifying the way, or code of behavior, that is in harmony with the natural order.

Shintō literally means "the way of Kami" where the word Kami is understood to represent the divine lifeforce which sustain all things, Ex-Nihilo animate and inanimate - and this may also be said as ("the way of the gods").

In Japanese, the word Shin can mean "new" and using different characters, it may also mean "divine | god | spirit".

Most people read a translation of something in English and never bother to check the original scripts, documents or other sources - and they just accept that the translations are accurate when in many cases, the translators have a personal, religious or financial bias.

Have you ever considered looking up the original meaning of ShinTo?

Buddhism is not a religion

In fact, the path and teachings of Buddhism compliment every other decent religion I have studied.

In fact the benefits of meditation are so great that it truly is a shame that so many people disregard meditation because they have been falsely told that Buddhism is a religion which conflicts with their own religious views.

If you Fact Check that last sentence you will see that it is not a religion.

I Repeat

Buddha is not - and was not - a deity, in fact and NOT a deified religious worship of The Buddha as rubbish TV shows portray.

The Dalai Lama clearly states that h.

Further Info ↟↟

It is interesting to note that it is taught in both Kabbalah and Buddhism that those who support a "seeker's" path and journey to enlightenment also gain some or all of this enlightenment.

And unless the donor is complicit in any negative actions, they will only receive the benefits and not any of the negative Karma the "seeker" is burdened with - if they sin.

Naga (नाग) translates as "serpent" (snake). Interestingly, in Japanese, Naga means "long".

Men are called Sadhu and women are called Sadhvi.

Regular Sadhus ↟↟

A regular Sadhu (Saddhu) is a seeker of spiritual enlightenment through ascetic practices and devotion who has renounced (given up) almost all worldly possessions and desires, seeking peity or spiritual path.

In many cases, these will (usually) be older people who have completed raising their children and fulfilled all marriage obligations.

They will typically leave all of their worldly possessions to their wife and family and basically travel around with only the clothes they have on, a bag and they typically live on charity.

Naga Sadhu ↟↟

A Naga Sadhu, on the other hand, is a specific type of Shaiva (Shiva) Sadhu (someone who worships Shiva). Sadhus are mostly men.

They are well known for their naked appearance, ash or bindi (colored powder) smudged on their bodies, and often portrayed as some kind of warrior ascetics.

While many Naga Sadhus are strict vegetarians. Some others, namely the Sect however, may be non-vegetarian and in some cases, completely degenerate in that they will even eat the meat from a corpse.

They do this in order to become like Shiva.

Personally, the reason I never persued this method of asceticism is because I was first introduced to the Aghori Naga Sadhus sect and I felt complete revulsion when I found out about their human body eating hobby.

Extreme ↟↟

While the people of India tend to take this ascension journey to the extreme, "true" ascetics are well known in the western world as monks and nuns.

As stated above, most adherents of this "technique" tend to be older men, there are still many cases where young people get the urge to follow this rather extreme path.

In Sanskrit the word Bhagawan (Bhagavan) means god (masculine) and Bhagawati means goddess (feminine).

WARNING

I am totally NOT a fan of people who claim to be (or accept any title) proclaiming that they are god per se.

Bhagavan + Bhagawati are often associated with god like attributes like beauty, fame, knowledge, power, wealth, and renunciation of physicality, many of which are considered God like qualities.

Things to L@@K out for.

  1. People who use the name god in their name.
  2. People who use extreme titles. (like MalkiTzedik which means righteous king - aka the messiah)
  3. People who use "revered" names like Sarasvati (Hinduism) - which used to be the main river of india - but it silted up and changed course and became the Ganges (Ganga).

Sarasvati == Saraswati

People calling themselves auspicious names should be considered suspicious.

This is because they typically do not live up to their lofty ascetic name.

Why is this?

Your name is like a garment which covers you and the whole idea of being a Sadhu is the renunciation of physicality. - which should also include ego and arrogance.

I have found that many people mistakenly follow someone simply because of their "lofty" name.

The following story is one that I have heard of many times over the years (unfortunately).

One time my housemate (flatmate) got all excited because someone called Acharya had come to her "group" and Acharya means spiritual teacher in Hinduism and Buddhist.

She came home deeply disappointed because he had asked her for a "private session" and she had agreed.

He basically injected her with his wisdom during a frenetic horizontal folk dancing "episode" which according to het lasted all of 2 seconds.

I reminder her that she needed to go and get blood testsed in a few days.

Why Do Sadhus Give Up Their Possessions? ↟↟

This answer is quite simple yet most people will not understand or accept the answer.

In our world, the status of success is measured by physical wealth and hordings.

In both Vedic teachings and in Kabbalah, it is the spiritual ascension that denotes success.

In the bible there is a where Abraham asks God how will he know that he will inherit the land.

The answer is absolutely not what most of you will expect.

To further expand on this, you will need to also know the following.
