The British "edited" many names of places in their "colonial" conquest of the 7 seas, but they were not the only ones who changed history for convenience.
Thanks to the Brits, "Buddh" became Buddha, "Mahabharat" became Mahabharata, Chennai became Madras, Mumbai became Bombay, Myanmar became Burma, etc.
One of the earliest names of India was "Sindhu" (सिन्धु Sanskrit for large body of water like a Great River or ocean) and in this case it applied to the Indus River which was retranslated as the Sindhu River.
The term Sindhu is historical in that the ancient Persians pronounced "Sindhu" as "Hindu."
Later, the Greeks translated this into "Indos (Indus)," which eventually evolved into the names "Hindu" and "India" which we use today.

Then the Persians called Sindhu - "Hindu" (Hindustan (Jai-Hind)) because they could not pronounce the letter "S" properly, and then it became Indos by the Greeks and then it became Bharat as it became known locally by the people because of the teachings of King Bharata (namely the Mahabharata), and then along came the global renamers, "The British" who called it India. Brief overview.
The importance of actually knowing.
Before you think that you know "a word", you should check to see what its origins are because using the wrong word can affect you subconsciously - especially long term - if you make these mis-words part of your mental programming.
Some say that there are over 50 definitions of the word
Name Change Trivia ↟↟
A modern example (or 2) of name changes you may not be aware of.
1) Most people are aware of the Japanese "L" and "R" issue but they also often have "M" and "N" interchange issue as well.
So "Aloe Vera" would commonly be pronounced as "Aroe Vera" etc.
2) Arabs cannot (naturally) pronounce the letter "P".
In Egypt the currency is the Egyptian "Pound" which the modern Egyptians call the "Bound" and the word "Palestine" cannot be a natural Arabic country because they call it "Balestine".
If Balestine was originally Arabic as many claim, then why did they call it a name they could not pronounce?
Starting point only.
The following information is not a complete history of India as that would need to be its own website. Instead it is a sample of starting points for you to explore for more information - if you are interested.
I have tried to include most of the relevant general bits of information which most Westerners would have as questions - but this falls far short of any kind of authority about the complexities of India.
India is a county beyond the mental capacity of most Westerners (for example: when I was young, India was the land of curry - full stop.
The history of India is far richer and more complex than most people have any idea of.
And while many countries may make the claim that they also have a complex, rich and varied history, the problem for most of these countries is that their populations - and thus most of their history - has been erased by wars or pestilence or even famine - and we see all 3 in the Inca timeline.
If you ask the "average" person in India if UFO's exist, many will look at you as if you are stupid for asking such a question (because the answer is YES).
So people in the West laugh at those who believe in UFO's and yet they ignore the
Another bit of Trivia for the day is that Most Temples in India are shaped after Vimanas.
Yet again, the ignorance and extreme biases of wikipedia are evident in their descriptions of Vimanas.
How could thousands of temples - ALL ACROSS India - be built using the same intricate format "of a Vimana" correctly referred to as
Vimana style temples are classified as "Dravidian Style Temples" which are based off the external ornate Vimana designs.
However, you also have the
The story of Lord Krishna fighting King Salva (or Shalva) is told in both the Mahabharata (in the Vana Parva or Forest Book) and the Bhagavata Purana (Tenth Skandha, Chapters 76–77).
Dravidian Style Temples?
Q: So how many Dravidian Style Temples are there in India?
A: It is estimated that there are thousands of Dravidian Style Temples across (mainly Southern) India - so again I ask the question, if Vimanas were mythological, how could this design be incorporated across India in such high numbers?
If you watch
MahaBaliPuram translates as the "Great Bali residence".
As of 2023–2024, there are roughly 38,615 to 80,000 Hindu temples in the State of Tamil Nadu alone.

Not all of these are Dravidian Style Temples.
Sapta Sindhu ↟↟
Sapta Sindhu means the land of 7 rivers which is how "India" was originally referred to - (way) back in the day.
Both of the words "Hindu" and "India" come from the Sanskrit word "Sindhu" (which means river).
Which river?
The Saraswati (Sarasvati) river which silted up and forced a new river to be created which we call the Ganges (Ganga).
The Persians
The Persians call Sindhu "Hindu", then along came the Greeks and Sindhu was reincarnated as Indos followed by the English who renamed it India. (because Indos was too complicated?)
India was also commonly called "Bharat" by the people and in the Sanskrit language, "Bharat" (भारत) means “in search of light and knowledge."
While most of you may have heard of the epic MahaBharata - did you know that MahaBharata means ("Great Bharat") or "in search of the great light of knowledge"?
Indians call the MahaBharata the "MahaBharat" while it is anglicized as MahaBharatAH in most translations.
King (Raja) Bharata ↟↟
King Bharata, or Emperor Bharata (Raja Bharata), is a legendary monarch in Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist tradition, widely regarded as the ancestor or progenitor of the Pandavas and Kauravas from the MahaBharata.
He is the son of King Dushyanta and Queen Shakuntala, born in the Lunar dynasty, and is considered the first Chakravarti (universal monarch) who united the Indian subcontinent, which is known as BharataVarsha (the land of Bharata).
King Bharata is credited with starting the Vedas which spread across what we now call India and the "Knowledge of Bharata" was shortened to become part of (the) Bharat (knowledge system).
It should be noted that while many associate the "MahaBharata" as being "written" by King Bharata and thus they quickly dismiss the importance of this "book", what most people do not realize is that the MahaBharata is divinely inspired and mathematically complex.
The mathematical complexity of the MahaBharata goes way beyond coincidences.
I have often heard uninformed and ignorant people say that Moses wrote The Torah when they have never looked into the mathematical complexities of the Torah.
And yet they perform to a live audience based on their opinion only.
