5 Stages Of Meditation
What are the 5 Stages Of Meditation?
Each stage also includes various grades.
We will only discuss the 5 Stages below.
With all stages of meditation, your primary goal is to "focus and see" inside your head - approximately 1 inch or 3 cms between your eyes.
You may also like to consider reading this "Melodies" page which talks about elevating your mood before meditating or praying.
I was taught to "look" or visualize clouds blocking the sun and with every exhale, I was to become "the wind" which blows away the clouds and reveal the sun.
This has a much greater spiritual significance than I am saying and at a later date after this site is established, I will explain why.
Say the Mantra aloud
When you begin meditating, it is best (IMO) to start off saying the mantra out loud - like the easy to remember "OM". This gives you several benefits which I cover on the "Chanting" page.
- You can feel the vibration moving through your body.
- Less distractions.
- It creates (brain) "muscle memory".
- Most people will start to get meditation benefits almost immediately.
- "Chanting Benefits"

Beginners ↟↟
For beginners, do this.
Breathe in - say mantra as you breathe out.
Repeat.
If you get distracting thoughts - this is called your monkey mind - you can control these "Monkey Mind" thoughts with just a little bit of discipline and some effort and practice.
More advanced
More advanced method - say a short (maximum 4 words) mantra like this:
- Breath in - breath out and say Mantra
- say Mantra
- say Mantra Mantra
- Start again
Have you ever noticed that many of the Buddhists you watch meditating actually "chant" the mantra?
What is the reason for this?
One of the reasons is to create 1 or more specific vibrations throughout the entire body.
This vibration - which depends on the specific mantra and thus tone used - has the potential to affect the physical and spiritual down to the quantum level - but only if done with focus and correct intent.
Mantra meditation is a lot more complicated than most people realize.
BTW: While chanting may look better on TV and Movies, there are actual physical and mental benefits as well. I elaborate on some of these "Chanting Benefits" here.
However ↟↟
When you get seriously into meditation and you are seeking some kind of spiritual ascent experience, then you need to do "some of the meditation techniques" without sound.
One technique is a meditation technique called listening to "The Silence" which is similar (but different) to "Blank Meditation".
Whisper the Mantra
This is where you quietly whisper the mantra.
Note that you will not get the benefits from chanting the mantra as I stated above.
Whispering the Mantra is good in some cases and once you become proficient at meditating, your body "should" tell you when to chant, when to whisper and when to meditate silently.
When you get very good at whispering your specific mantra, you should notice that you can feel a soft vibration passing through your body when you meditate.
In more advanced stages, you should also notice that this "vibration" is different from when you chant your mantra.
I liken this vibration to light passing through water - if you have ever been diving in the ocean and looked up as the sun emerges from clouds and shines down through the water.
Of even more subtle when it is like the rays of the morning sun shining diffused light through the trees in a forest just as the sun starts rising.
2 Way Mantra ↟↟
When you start doing this method, I suggest that you use single word mantras until you are very good at doing this.
Ideally a longer mantra should consist of no more than 4 words which you may increase as you become more proficient.
You quietly whisper the mantra on the "exhale" and also on the "inhale".
You need to calculate the timing of each inhale and exhale.
I have created a "10 Second Meditation Ping" video for people who are starting out doing breath control. This works very well for single word mantras like OM or Om Mani Padme Hum.
Basically you hear the ping and slowly breath in, then the next ping you slowly breath out, then repeat.
Breath control is very important and also helps control the distractive "Monkey Mind" .
Say the Mantra silently
This is where you say the Mantra to yourself (in your mind).
Note that some Mantras should be "Chanted" and others may be said silently.
This sounds simple doesn't it :)?
But the reality is that if you are using a distractive meditation technique like Guided Meditation or Transcendental Meditation, then ascended meditation experiences will be much harder than you realize.
To do this meditation properly, you need to be in control of your thoughts and distractions and be able to nullify them when they arise and this takes a lot of mental practice and control.
The best meditation technique for this is called "Controlled Meditation".
Meditation is like driving a car. You do not get into the back seat and look out the window while driving, do you?
It is "Control" which allows you to connect or disconnect from your physical body and it is only Control which allows you "the potential" to have higher experiences.
Say With Absolute Intent
Intent is a powerful technique enhancer IF it is done correctly.
This is where there are absolutely NO distractions and the Manta (or prayer) must be said very slowly.
This meditation technique may take hours to complete. Sometimes even longer.
If you are meditating properly, then it is not a 20 minute event.
When you start meditating, 20 minutes may seem like a long time, but as you advance, you will get to the stage where you may easily spend 1 or 2 or more hours meditating and you will feel great afterwards.
Elevate your mood
It is possible to elevate your mood before you start meditating or praying by listening to (or playing the song in your head) a few verses of your favorite spiritual song for several minutes before you actually start meditating or praying.
This has the "potential" to put you in a heightened state of spiritual emotion before you start. I write more about a few Mood "Melodies" I like on this page.
Ascension Meditation
Ascension Meditation is well beyond the scope of most people reading this website and it is well beyond the scope of most people doing meditation.
What I will tell you is this, Ascension Meditation requires discipline and control and without these 2 basic requirements, you have diddley chances of traveling to and fro.
Ascension Meditation requires focus, intent, love, kindness, compassion and charity to be done correctly.
If your soul is not pure, then it will also require absolutely genuine penance. Penance does NOT require any self harm.
This is because - for the vast majority of people - as they ascend, they will be challenged by the "Guardians" and if you are not mentally balanced, then these experiences are usually extremely upsetting and debilitating - both physically and mentally.
I have seen people who tried to ascend too quickly and came back wild eyed, mumbling incoherently and even frothing at the mouth.
It also requires years of "Controlled Meditation" where you have reached a state of nothingness.
I will tell you this. When (if) you ascend, your destination will be dependent upon your actions and what is in your heart.
Question Du Jour ↟↟
So now I will ask you a question.
IF physicality is impermanent and only created for the soul, how do you (we) know that the next level up is any different?
This next level is different from where you go when you die.
I am actually referring to the next reincarnation level.
This (first after life) level is a marshalling (assembly) area where you go to be debriefed and then "judged" on your "deeds" which you performed and also the Karma from actions you "caused" - directly and indirectly - to happen during the lifetime before you died.
If it is your "destiny" to be returned back to the physical world, there is a good chance that you will miss out on many of the steps which occur when you die permanently.
Not all souls are redeemable and some are expunged
Just because this next level feels fantastic - as anyone who is a good person and has died will tell you - it does not automatically qualify it to be your final destiny.
It is simply above this level.
Think of it like a pizza delivery person who needs to go back to the shop to get the next pizza to deliver.
Do you honestly think the Creator would create all of this Universe and then make dying a 1 dimensional - 2 choice experience?
There is something called the "Holographic Universe" theory, which, to most people on this planet and others, is a theory.
But to some people - like me - who have died and come back and have seen the "other side", the "Holographic Universe" is far more real than you can possibly imagine.
I briefly write about my "After Death" experiences when I died (twice) in May 2023 and how "everything" physical became NOTHING when I was visiting "The Other Side".
The reason that I briefly write about it, is because your experience should not be tainted by my experience and you should be careful about making emphatic statements when describing your experience "if" you have one (or more).
Always stipulate that "This Is What You Experienced personally".
Click here is you are interested in a theoretical concept of "Why We Exist" .
