Sir E. A. Wallis Budge is one of my favorite authors on Egyptology and he lived and wrote back in the time of revelations, adventure and wonder (and yes, even danger).

But he was not compromised by political lies as we see today.

Sir E. A. Wallis Budge travelled extensively around Egypt and spoke with the "natives" and treated them as human beings (unlike most other archaeologists at that time) and thus he gained many more insights and knowledge to events which were typically only passed down by word-of-mouth.
