Similar to , Zazen primarily focuses on your thoughts - (primarily).

Let me point out what is wrong with this method.

Up until the mid-1900's, most "Monks" had no access to TV or Radio or Newspapers, and most may not have even wanted to have this access.

As such, their main focus and thus their main thoughts would have been contemplative thoughts based on "Scriptures".

This is vastly different to you and what you are exposed to on a daily basis, from the Internet, Radio, Movies, Newspapers, TV + general conversations and .

So if you are genuinely seeking potential enlightenment, please consider more advanced meditations like from the beginning.

You only have this lifetime of this level awareness and ask yourself why would you waste such a golden opportunity.

Here is a song from my childhood which explains why you should not be a

Top What Is Zazen?

Zazen (座禅) is a type of Japanese Buddhist meditation which involves sitting quietly and focusing on your thoughts and feelings.

One of the key tenets of Zazen is to suspend judgement of others - which especially includes not being involved in verbal gossip or even gossip thoughts.

Many sources assert that Zazen and Zen are the same thing and that they both originated in the 5th century in India.

The problem with this is that Zen techniques and teachings are found in the very ancient BON religion which is purportedly at least 12,000 - 14,000 years before the age of New Bon.

Zazen meditation is similar but slightly different from specifically focuses on actions you do each day and any consequences which you may initiate because of your actions (or inactions) or words.

Contemplative Meditation involves focusing on your thoughts and actions of each day and making yourself aware and accountable for any transgressions or sins you caused directly or indirectly.

Slight Digression ↟↟

Please note that Zazen is NOT and in fact you could say that "Zazen ZenZen Zen" - which loosely translates from Japanese as "Zazen is Definitely NOT Zen".

In most connotations, ZenZen in modern Japanese implies a negative aspect to a word or sentence or question (such as "definitely not") - however, in olden Japanese, ZenZen was sometimes used to prefix a positive.

Negative examples: (mdern Japanese)

Q: Do you have heaps of money?

  • A: ZenZen (definitely not) (absolutely not)
  • Q: Is the food delicious? (Oishi desu ka?)

  • A: ZenZen Oi'shi - or just ZenZen (NO, it is NOT delicious)
  • Please note that this is just one form of negative, so I will not be getting into Japanese grammar here.

3 quick Positive ZenZen examples: (Pre 1900's Japanese)

Remember that this positive expression lasted from the EDO period (circa 1600's) up until the early 1900's and then it started to be used in the negative form.

    • Q: How are you? (Genki des ka?)
    • A: ZenZen Genki (I am good / healthy)
    • Q: Are you OK? (Dai'jobu des ka?)
    • A: ZenZen Daijobu (I am OK)
    • Q: Is the food delicious? (Oishi desu ka?)
    • A: ZenZen Oishi (Yes, it is delicious)

If you say this "positive aspect" to (much) older Japanese, they "may" understand - or become offended if you get it wrong - but the younger generation (generally speaking) never use this unless as a joke.

    Translations

This is why you need to not only understand the modern versions of the language you are studying, but also possible older meanings of the same word or phrase.

Another morphing word in Japanese is the words NEH and NAH.

Typically you would say to a man "it is cold Nah" (Samui Nah) and to a woman you would say "it is cold Neh" (Samui Neh or Samui Des Neh)

But, generally speaking - and not applicable everywhere - most people say the NEH to both men and women.

** BTW, Samui has nothing to with Koh Samui (Samui Island, Thailand), it just sounds the same.

This is a simple and incomplete description of the words used - it serves simply as a guide to show you that the older the anguage, the more changes there possibly are that you need to be aware of.

In English, the common cursive of the letter "f" used to look like this ƒ.

    Top How To Do Zazen

Sit in a comfortable position in a quiet place.

Start with a single mantra to focus your mind.

Consider any thoughts which may arise.

Basically, this is another name for

If you are sitting on a chair, try and keep your feet flat on the floor or ground.

If you are sitting on the floor, sit as comfortably as possible and even utilize a small cushion (Zafu) if possible so that you are even more comfortable.

This (Zafu) cushion should have enough substance to support your full body weight so that you can sit in the "crouched kneeling" position. (sitting on your "haunches" or feet).

Alternatively, sit on the cushion and gently cross your legs in front of you keeping your spine as straight as possible.

Focus on your breathing and your mantra.

As you get thoughts is, consider them and then let them go and return to your mantra.

As I said above, this is very similar to Transcendental Meditation.

    Pro ↟↟

This is "a" meditation technique ideally targeted at beginners.

It suits a lot of Westerners who lack discipline.

    Con ↟↟

This technique lacks the potential for you to do advanced meditation techniques because it lacks discipline.

    Consider This

You are here for a very limited amount of time, so why would you waste that precious time thinking or meditating on the color of your shoes or what one of your friends wore or ANY other completely useless and irrelevant piece of information?

Can you remember back to your hormonal days of mis-spent youth?

Think about how many days, weeks, months and years you spent thinking about genitalia?

One of my teachers asked me "what was my biggest waste of time this lifetime?

After a brief minute I replied, "I have spent over 30 years looking at women's asses and I have -Nothing- to show for it".

He replied, "Imagine how much further you would be spiritually if your focus was in the right place? You may have even reached your ascension point and completed this cycle".

    SUMMARY ↟↟

If you want to do this meditation and you do not care about ascending your soul to get off this "level" planet, then this method is fine.

    However:

In my own personal opinion, I would strongly suggest that you did not use this meditation method, but instead focused on a meditation technique - like - which gives you the "potential" opportunity to do higher levels of meditation as you progress.
