Quote Du JourQuote Du Jour
The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. It is the fear that you are doing something you know is wrong and the fact that one day you will need to atone.
But the real question is: What is the end of wisdom?

Top What Is Gurdjieff Meditation?

Gurdjieff Meditation involves an ocean and usually 2 or more weeks of your life. Some say that it is similar to but just a different style.

This technique is known by several names including:

  1. Beach Meditation
  2. Ocean Meditation
  3. Gurdjieff Meditation

I was taught this as "Gurdjieff Meditation" so this is how I will refer to it on this website.

George Gurdjieff (Georgij Ivanovic Gurdziev) used to teach a method whereby he had people sit on a beach or somewhere close to - and within view of - the ocean and simply had them "watch" the waves all day.

Someone was paid to bring them food and water and all they had to do was look at (ONLY) the waves.

This will eventually create a hypnotic disconnected state of mind from your cacophony of thoughts.

I have tried this method and I found a profound sense of calmness after about 10 days.

Some people I have spoken to took 2 - 3 weeks to unwind their brain, so please do not expect miracles in a day or 3.

NO Tech

Do not take any phones, computers, radio or even a watch or clock. Just the clothes you want to wear and sleeping gear.

You will also need somewhere secure to sleep at night and somewhere to be safe during the day as well.

Doing this alone?

Not a good idea. You should have someone monitor you every day at least 2 - 3 times a day.

You should bring in 3 - 4 weeks of food, and then you have storage problems.

You will also need at least 20 liters (40 pints) of water a week. (wind and heat will also cause faster dehydration.)

Consider also having a HDPE water bottle so if you get thirsty, you can quickly take a sip or 2 instead of getting up to get your drink.

Not Traditional

This is not exactly a traditional Meditation method, it is however, one of the most obscure yet brilliant techniques that I have encountered which has the potential to completely placate a fragmented mind and transform it from an erupting volcano into a sea of serene tranquility.

In short, this method is a condensed version of many months of traditional meditation which achieves a platform of tranquility from which serious meditation can start.

The down side to this method is the time required to do it. Like I said, it is a condensed version and so is the time required.

Literally 2-3 weeks of total dedication, and sometimes even longer.

Most people go through "information overload withdrawals" when they do this and those who are deficient in Magnesium, Potassium, Chromium, Vanadium and other minerals will often go through strong emotional experiences as well.

You will know that you are on the verge of this experience when you start completely thinking about going home to people who need you (the most common excuse).

From people with whom I have spoken who have done this technique, it can often take 7 - 10 days just to get the brain to stop running 6 marathons at the same time.

Then you need at least several days for the serenity to settle into your brain.

In 2026, most people are run mentally ragged with information overload.

To exacerbate this, we also have serious personal, family and financial issues to compound our already discombobulated minds.

TIP: Do not get sunburned.

TIP 2: Sit in a position where you are at least 30+ feet (10 meters) above the water in case of tsunami..

Also, if you do this with someone as a partner, DO NOT talk or you will be wasting your time. Talk when you get home.

Top How To Do Gurdjieff Meditation

1) You need a beach where you are safe from "people".

2) You need elevation in case of tsunami - at least 30 meters (60 feet).

3) You need access to a toilet or you can go native - your choice but if you go native, you need to bury what you leave behind - so bring a shovel.

3a) Bring some long (thin) nylon rope and make a line from your "tent" to where you toilet pit is and tie a knot 2 or 3 meters (6 - 10 feet) from the pit so that you can go at night and you know when to slow down.

4) Find a comfortable position near the beach so that you have an uninterrupted view of the waves.

5) Focus on your breathing, slowly in and out - try the to get your timing right. 10 seconds in and 10 seconds out.

5a) There are many different breathing methods and can help you decide which one suits you best.

6) Monkey Mind: Watch the waves and listen to them as they hit the beach.

6a) Notice the difference in the sound and shape of each wave.

7) Focus on 4 things: (1) Your breath (2) The motion of the waves (3) The sound of the waves.

7a) and number 4 is WHAT IS MY PURPOSE?

You can do this subconsciously or consciously - it is your choice. If you want to do it subconsciously, then please read the information on how to do this on the page.

8) Constantly return back to these 3 things.

What About Mantras? ↟↟

You can use a mantra if you like. In fact if I may suggest the which increases your brains Gamma waves. There is even a study proving this, I call it the

I was told to be on the beach just after sunrise and stare at the sunlight reflecting OFF the water (Not at the sun directly).

This helps balance you mentally.

Eating is optional and I would suggest that if you do eat, that this is vegetarian only (NO meat).

2 light meals a day will give you a better experience than 3 heavy meals.

"Water Fasting" is even better still.

Meat makes you tired and it also impedes your experiences.

Bathing can be done in the ocean but be aware that some people may develop salt calluses on their feet if they do not dry them properly when leaving the water. I would even suggest that you lightly rinse your feet with fresh water after you leave the salt water.

Make sure that someone monitors you at least 2 or 3 times a day. If they are at work, you may use a phone to text them. DO NOT TALK to them unless it is a real emergency.

Leaving

Make sure that the person monitoring you is there when you are leaving.

DO NOT DRIVE after your meditation. Most people are often very light headed and it will be dangerous to drive. Let them drive or call a taxi or rickshaw or even a JeepNey - if one is available.

When you get home, write a diary - not when you are on the beach.

Good luck.

SERIOUS WARNING ↟↟

If you see the water suddenly GO OUT much further than normal, then you need to get to higher ground immediately because this is one of the first of a tsunami event.
