In Mahayana Buddhism, a Bodhisattva बोधिसत्त्व is a person who is able to reach or has reached Nirvana (Heaven**) but delays doing so through compassion for suffering beings. This is an extremely liberal translation.
Bodhisattva is a combination of two Sanskrit words: Bodhi (बोधि), meaning "awakening / awakened" or "enlightened" and Sattva (सत्त्व), meaning "being" (person).
** In actual fact the word Nirvana (Heaven) actually technically refers to the next level above this one - and not some final destination as most Christians are mis-lead to believe.
When you die, you go to a better place only in respect to the fact that it is not physicality per se but this is not "heaven" either.
It is a transitional "level" where your "soul" is processed after being debriefed and then it is allocated another "lifetime" to complete.
This does not automatically infer or claim that the next lifetime will be human.
The "level" the Bodhisattva gives up to return back to this earthly plane is beyond the level you go to when you die.
For those of you who have had a "positive"
For me personally, if I did not love my wife so much, I would not have come back.
FYI: I have experience in dying and coming back. I died twice in 2023 and I must tell you this, IF you are a good person, you will have the most beautiful experience (of your life - no pun).
The Bodhisattva returns back to this plane (level) to assist others who are close to ascension.
This can be a game of Russian Roulette for some because physicality comes with its own set of problems.
Most rich people are on the cusp of ascension but when they get all of their money and power, they fail in the charity and humility aspects and thus they are cast down - and in many cases, they must start their cycle of 500 perfect years again.
You should note that a person can live an entire lifetime and NOT complete even 1 single perfect day which nullifies that entire lifetime and then they must begin again. (rinse and repeat as they say).

While a Bodhisattva is often assisting a specific person or persons to ascend, it can also be for the general population as well - with some "modern" examples being

Adi Shankara left us 2 mantras, one hidden within the other and while both are beauitful, the Mano Buddhi mantra activates Gamma Brain Waves which is something no other mantra I know of can do.

A "true" Bodhisattva draws light from above and reflects this light through teachings of love and harmony.

While assisting specific people ascend is often direct and personal, it may also include indirect assistance like books and these modern times, videos and podcasts etc.
Note: I am in no way implying that The Dalai Lama "only" came here to help the general public and I suspect that he also had specific students he was assisting privately.
However, his compassion was so great that he also became a lighthouse (beacon) to millions of others seeking the path of Enlightenment.
